I hear the edge of town is gettin' wider
We’re tradin' corn and lettuce in for lawns
Pavin' over cabbage with prefabricated homes
The countryside is goin’ goin’ gone
The ground beneath these streets once fed families
With everything that soil and sunlight makes
This place once gave us everything we needed
But now it only takes
Farmer Jim sits a drinkin’ on the corner
Below his room up on the 18th floor
The kids grew up and moved in all directions
Ain’t no Sunday suppers anymore
While passin’ through I asked him for directions
Lookin’ for the nearest grocery store
He said I’d have to take the bus to get there
Then he took a swig and said a little more
He said "the ground beneath these streets…"
I hear the edge of town is gettin' wider
We’re tradin' corn and lettuce in for lawns
Pavin' over cabbage with prefabricated homes
The countryside is goin’ goin’ gone
